Want to get yourself a job in New Zealand, and don't know where to start?
Most often, people tend to think that the best way to search for a job in New Zealand is to work with as many recruiters, and to apply for as many jobs as they can. It's not.
It’s about knowing your ultimate value in the market, understanding the NZ hiring cycle, and finding hidden opportunities to apply for in the job market. Most of all, it’s about taking charge of your own job search journey, and being proactive with a proven strategy that doesn’t leave it up to others to rely on.
Bill Raymond talks about his job search experience using The NZ Job Search Method and how he managed to get himself a job, not once but twice when he needed to, and ended up with two job offers the second time around.
As an accomplished, award winning copywriter one would think Alfred Lee’s job search journey would be a piece of cake. He shares his journey with us and how NZ Job Search helped him secure the move to NZ.
Like so many of the job seekers we’ve come across, Stuart Wyness thought he knew what he was doing when it came to job search. He was even on the right track for the most part. Here, he expresses what it’s like to work with NZ Job Search and what he found he was missing from his job search strategy.
This is a step-by-step course that takes you through everything from research, to job search tools prep and implementation, to interviewing and securing the job offer you want.
When you have a solid strategy to follow you’ll:
- Save money on paying others to prepare your job search tools – like on multiple tailored CVs, getting your LinkedIn profile professionally setup, or writing Cover Letters that set you apart from other job seekers
(We’ll teach you how to do this yourself and check your work so it looks professional).
- Know how to package yourself as a highly marketable employee to the people with hiring authority.
- Know how to find hidden opportunities that aren’t advertised yet, & position yourself as the only one applying for the job
- Feel less stressed because you’ll have built confidence in what you’re doing, knowing that it works.
- Get yourself a job faster by covering your tacks and leveraging the network, saving yourself time, money and emotion.
When Leon van Niekerk, the Founder of the NZ Job Search methodology, came to New Zealand, he didn't have any network or degrees to leverage off of. It was also 2009, the worst year to look for a job considering the financial recession the world was going through which mean't companies weren't hiring at the time.
As an entrepreneur, who needed a job offer to be eligible to live and work in NZ, he knew he had to get himself in front of the people who had the authority to make the decision to hire him, rather than to go through the typical HR and recruiter systems where the odds were stacked against him and there was a lot of red tape.
He started leveraging off his experience as an entrepreneur, and focussed on building a strategy to find hidden opportunities in the job market where he would be the only applicant for the job. Suddenly his fortune started to change and he was getting interviews and job offers before they had even seen his credentials.
He has used this method ever since and has been able to position himself as one of two people considered for every other job he has ever applied for. In one case they even made a position for him to full. Now, he is running his own company again and is teaching people how to use the same strategy he used to get himself a job in NZ as a migrant without a work visa.
Seven years later, #TheJobzdojoMethod has been tested through the success of the members who have implemented it as well as through extensive surveys and in-depth interviews with companies and business owners in order to perfect it and understand exactly what they want in a candidate.

Welcome to the course: We’ll discuss our goals and how to prepare your mind for the job search journey. Then we’ll cover your job search calendar and show you the best links to research the country, find out what you need to be eligible and prepare yourself for the job search journey. We’ll save you time by giving you the best places to look, as well as qualified information all in one place rather than than wading through the mass of info on the net. Finally, we’ll give you the full, comprehensive NZ Job Search Job Search Manual to download, and show you how to find everything you’ll require for the course.
Module 2: The Mastermind Membership Support Group
Be supported and be supportive: We’ll introduce you to our inner circle where you’ll e-meet other NZ Job Search job seekers and alumni, our Partners in our network and get access to the job search coaches. You’ll have a safe place (the group is unsearchable online) to ask questions and get professional answers as well as make what may be your first friends in NZ. And we’ll look forward to meeting you in person when you’re in NZ.
Module 3: Job Search Strategy
Choose your path: We’ll talk about the different types of job search processes out there and show you which ones to throw out and why, which ones to keep and how they fit together in our proven, proactive job search strategy. First we’ll dispel common job search myths, then we’ll go through mistakes job seekers make, and we’ll explain the NZ hiring process to you in detail. Once that foundation is laid, we’ll ensure you understand the best strategy for job search in New Zealand – who you should be talking with and how to get in front of them. This will cover everything from understanding how job boards, recruiters, HR managers and Hiring Managers work, and how you can use this knowledge to your advantage as a job seeker. We’ll discuss the common red tape areas such as no local experience, the work visa Catch22 and the over qualified status and we’ll show you how to work around each area.
Module 4: How To Find Your Ultimate Value
This module will teach you how to plan your trip and most importantly how to lay your foundation for your job search. Everything from your personal brand, CV, online profiles and all communication hinges off of this aspect. You need to understand your ultimate value in the local NZ job market – whether you’re moving countries or are already a local and are looking for a new role in a different company. Most people skip this step and end up presenting themselves as proficient in many areas instead of knowing what sets them apart from the scores of others applying for the same roles. We have a process which singles out what you need to be known for and we’ll show you how to do that in this module.
Module 5: Getting LinkedIn
No modern day job search process is complete without LinkedIn. In this module you’ll be shown how to do your LinkedIn profile with techniques on how to write it yourself, as well as how to use your profile to build and leverage your network in NZ. An important part of job search is knowing how to keep your life organised and how to keep track of each application, networking opportunity and email. We’ll share our favourite tools to do this, and give you a system you can easily follow to integrate the process into your life to save time and help you keep on top of things.
Module 6: The Winner CV
Most people make the mistake of using a generic CV. In this module we’ll show you our tried and tested NZ Job Search CV – a CV which unlike most others has the aim of getting you in front of the people who have the authority to hire you – not HR or recruiters. There is a strategy behind the layout of the CV, as well as how it should be used to effectively get the response you need. No more sending your CV into the black abyss!
Module 7: The Personal Spark Letter
This is one of our favourite job search tools! It’s a fresh and very effective take on the Cover Letter. It is used in a different way to the cover letter and has proven itself time and time again to get our job seekers success. We’ll explain to you why it works, how to use it, and give you a step-by-step instructions on how to write your own and tailor it each time you send it out.
Module 8: Working with Recruiters
Many job seekers fall into the trap of working with recruiters incorrectly. This is a comprehensive module which teaches you how recruiters work, how to look for a recruiter to work with, and how to balance the relationships you have with your NZ network and your chosen recruiters so that things are mutually beneficial.
Module 9: Our NZ Job Search Partners
A large part of the success of The NZ Job Search Method comes from the NZ Job Search Network we’ve established. As part of our membership you’ll be able to leverage the relationships we’ve built over time. Our partners are chosen for their services, their success rates and their willingness to work with immigrants and returning expats as well as locals. They have agreed to give our members NZ Job Search rates and cover a number of industries from the various recruitment industries to services you’ll require when making the move to NZ (Help brining your money over, Immigration Advisors etc). You’ll be introduced to our partners in this module and shown the best way to work with them.
Module 10: Networking in NZ
You’d be surprised at how many people do not know how to network effectively. It’s not just about handing out business cards, getting connection requests on LinkedIn, or going to networking events where you meet as many people as you can who may be able to help you. In this module you’ll what networking is and what it isn’t, and most importantly we’ll teach you how to strategically network by building relationships that are based on common ground and authenticity and how to leverage those relationships so that they are mutually beneficial. New Zealand is a social country and it’s important that you understand the culture and how things are done here.
Module 11: Interviewing
Interviewing is often a challenging part of the process for many job seekers. This module aims to help you to feel confident and on top of things when you interview in NZ. We’ll go through the interviewing process in NZ, how to prepare for each type of interview – from phone, skype, panel, coffee interview to the more conventional one – and how to address the interview conversation as an equal. We’ll teach you how to navigation questions from answering them without using rehearsed answers to thoughtful and relevant questions to ask. We’ll also work on those more challenging discussions such as salary and the work visa chat.
Module 12: The Job Offer
In this final step, we’ll work through the NZ employee rights and how to organise your visa paperwork required from the company and we’ll go over how things are done in terms of contract etiquette.
Module 13: BONUS VAULT
Training shared by our guests and any bonus resources over and above those already shared in the previous modules.
